What is a forest called? When studying a place online, choosing terms for collecting data is the first step. A forest has many names: official, vernacular, specific, generic, and touristic. The following is an attempt at exhausting the names of a forest in Scotland, repurposing a Search engine's suggested searches. It relies on three kinds of suggestions that Google sows among image results: Suggested searches, Popular Searches, and Popular Topics. The process is similar to a list-building strategy named associative query-snowballing: one starts from a known forest name, collects all suggested terms, and reiterates. Like many attempts of this kind, the resulting collection of names is muddy and incomplete. Not all forest names are included in this list, some terms refer to homonymous places, and others are just byproducts of Google's politics of association.
